The Shape of Water

"Memory of Water #4" by Linda Finn Memory of Water #4

Water shapes, reflects and transforms. It is the ultimate metaphor, being the main component of all living things, including ourselves. As someone who loves being in water, I have always been intrigued by the way in which water transforms and distorts objects seen through it. Ripples and waves create repeated lines and shapes which may be read or interpreted as writing on water.

Water is literally an element of reflection—it is used in many religious ceremonies, it mirrors our environment, supports and sustains our bodies. If we go with the flow, we will move forward, but if we fight the current, we are lost. These images about water invite contemplation and closer scrutiny by the viewer, echoing my feelings that water is an elusive medium. Therefore, viewers may “read the water” in different ways.
